The Dad Behind The Blog

In honor of Father's Day this weekend, I am "interviewing" the Dad behind the blog...my Dad!  There are a few important things that my Dad passed onto me, his love of Christ, baseball, writing and The Beatles.  Oh OK, he probably passed a little bit of his sarcastic humor on to me, too.  Let me introduce you to my Dad.

What is your favorite thing about being a Dad?

My favorite thing was watching you grow up and celebrating those special moments at church, school, and college!  The San Marcos Junior Miss Pageant really stands out as a high point in this dad's life. Just watching you mature and be so cool, calm, and collected on the stage made me burst with pride!

(Emily's Note:  There's no way I am adding a picture of me in sequined "pageant wear" onto the blog, so how about one from my college graduation. And, let me add; it was a scholarship pageant, NOT a beauty pageant).

What is one of your favorite memories of raising me?

Oh, there are several, but watching you make your public confession of faith in Jesus, and then getting to baptize you has to be the all time favorite! Of course,  I also remember one day when you were still pretty new at driving. We were on SH 45 near Austin when you were approaching a sharp turn much faster than would be safe. I yelled, "Emily, slow down! Slow down!" Well, you did, of course and made the corner safely. Afterward I explained, in a voice sounding suspiciously like that of Ward Cleaver, "Em, the road is unforgiving! It doesn't know that you're a teenager with little experience! If you take the corner too fast, you'll drive off the road and possibly kill yourself!" I'm sure you've used that same line with Kendall! Right?

Emily's Note:  I have in fact used those exact same words with Kendall!

What words of encouragement or piece of advice would give to a parent raising their young family right now?

Well, you would expect this of me, but maintain a consistent life of faith in God is essential. And, start with good financial planning now and keep it going.

Jentry & Pop

Because you helped to instill a love of baseball in me; what is your favorite baseball memory with me?

Way too many of these! There's going to Wrigley Field and singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" with Harry Caray, watching the lady puke at the Ranger game when Bush 41 threw out the first pitch, catching a ball for you from Jaime Navarro, going onto the field at Dodger Stadium and getting caught standing on third base, getting Dale Murphy to autograph two posters at an Astro's game, going to the 100th anniversary game of the St Louis Cardinals. Gotta be more!

Pop & Jess

I picked a pretty great husband to be the father of my children.  What is your favorite thing about Mark?

Easy! He loves you and you love him!

Pop and the grandkids.
Thank you, Dad, for letting me feature you on the blog today, but more importantly thank you for your years of encouragement, love and answers.  You are my #1 source when I need to know how "I believe" in something spiritually or politically because I know you are fair, non-judgmental...and hello...smart!  Happy Father's Day, Dad!  I love you!

If you need a Father's Day meal idea, two of my Dad's favorites (and my husband's, too) are Cream Cheese Chicken and Sopapilla Cheesecake.  Check out those recipes.

  10. You have an exceptional daddy... he means so much to us, to our boys, and especially to my husband, Paul, with whom he has formed a beautiful brotherly bond in Christ. He has had an uncanny spiritual connection to my adult sons... and his messages resound strongly around our home in Hallettsville. So very thankful am I that God brought Ben Craver to you and to us!

  11. What an amazing daddy you have. I love that he mentioned baptizing you. I just watched a couple of kids get baptized at church yesterday and all I could think about is how proud their daddy's must have been that they were getting baptized on Fathers Day. Have a great Monday friend.

    1. That is so sweet!! The older I get, it is almost impossible for me to watch a baptism and not cry. It's such a sacred moment!
